From our standpoint, it's highly likely that your mobile phone, which is really your second brain — your mobile machine — is going to be the central figure, from a tech standpoint and a consumption standpoint, in your life. ... he thinks the ad market will move toward a few big companies that create online advertising ‘operating systems,’ just as there are operating systems for mobile phones and PCs. ... It will take a long time, but mobile advertising will be most expensive form of advertising ever created.

    Follow-up

Smartphones indeed became the primary device for internet access and content consumption. The digital ad market became highly concentrated among a few 'walled garden' platforms (Google, Meta, Amazon). While certain mobile ad formats command high prices, the claim of mobile being 'the most expensive form of advertising ever created' is an overstatement when applied across all formats and markets.
