    The short version

Ben Thompson predicted on December 2, 2024: “I think it is a cogent one [wearables]: the defining characteristic of all of these devices, particularly in contrast to the three previous paradigms, is the absence of a direct mechanical input mechanism; that leaves speech, gestures, and at the most primitive level, thought.” Verdict: Too early to tell. I think it is a cogent one [wearables]: the defining characteristic of all of these devices, particularly in contrast to the three previous paradigms, is the absence of a direct mechanical input mechanism; that leaves speech, gestures, and at the most primitive level, thought.

    Follow-up

The prediction describes the defining characteristic and interaction methods of a future computing paradigm (wearables) that is still emerging. While progress in speech and gesture interfaces is evident, the full realization and dominance of this paradigm, particularly in the absence of direct mechanical input, is yet to be seen.
