    RECEIPT #JASON-

    MAR 04, 2021

    Called it.

    PREDICTION BY

    Jason Kilar
“Only a handful of major streaming services "can ultimately get to scale, defined by hundreds of millions of paying subscribers around the world" - "Less than six."”

    FOLLOW-UP

Five years on, the count is not just under six - it is basically one. Netflix passed 325 million paying members in Q1 2026; Disney+ stopped disclosing at 132 million (fiscal Q4 2025); Amazon's 315 million figure is Prime Video ad-tier viewers, not paying subscribers. The shakeout Kilar called played out through mergers, bundles and retreats.

    RECEIPT #JASON-

    MAR 04, 2021

    Called it.

    PREDICTION BY

    Jason Kilar
“HBO Max is "two years ahead" of WarnerMedia's goal of 75 million - 90 million subscribers worldwide by 2025.”

    FOLLOW-UP

The corporate vehicle changed (WarnerMedia became Warner Bros. Discovery in 2022, and Kilar exited in the merger), but the trajectory he called held: WBD reported 97.7 million global streaming subscribers at the end of 2023 - above the 90 million ceiling, two years before the 2025 deadline, exactly the lead time Kilar claimed. Caveat: the post-merger figure combines Max and discovery+.

    RECEIPT #BRIAN-

    JAN 23, 2023

    Missed it.

    PREDICTION BY

    Brian O'Kelley
“"We need to align these frameworks in the next six to nine months - no later than the end of 2023 - so we can incorporate them into the fabric of the industry and start driving substantial reduction. ... I believe there is a clear pathway to aligning on a single framework in this timeframe."”

    FOLLOW-UP

No single framework arrived by the end of 2023 - or since. GARM and Ad Net Zero's Global Media Sustainability Framework only appeared as a draft at Cannes in June 2024, and GARM itself was dissolved two months later after the X lawsuit, leaving stewardship with Ad Net Zero and the landscape still fragmented (Digiday, August 2024).

    RECEIPT #CORY-T

    NOV 14, 2018

    Missed it.

    PREDICTION BY

    Cory Treffiletti
“"The coming 12 months will see the big tech stacks snatch up their CDP toolsets. ... My prediction is, acquisitions in this space will heat up in Q1 and round out by Q3 2019."”

    FOLLOW-UP

The window came and went quietly: the big stacks (Adobe, Oracle, Salesforce) built rather than bought in 2019. The flagship CDP deal landed a year after his window closed - Twilio's $3.2 billion all-stock acquisition of Segment in October 2020. Direction right, timing wrong - and the timing was the prediction.

    RECEIPT #CORY-T

    NOV 19, 2025

    Too early to tell.

    PREDICTION BY

    Cory Treffiletti
“OpenAI and Anthropic will quickly join the "power players" in digital advertising by further diving into native ad formats. ... They will attract more ad dollars and could easily become part of the top echelon of ad platforms in just a year or two.”

    FOLLOW-UP

Tracking well so far. OpenAI was piloting ads in ChatGPT in the US by March 2026 and expanded the pilot to the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea by August 2026 (OpenAI). Anthropic has yet to introduce ads. The full call - both joining the "power players" within a year or two - stays open through 2027.

    RECEIPT #PATRIC

    FEB 09, 2020

    Missed it.

    PREDICTION BY

    Patrick Dolan
“P4A is working to support the enactment of comprehensive federal regulations to supersede the emerging patchwork of state rules, which cause significant harm to our industry.”

    FOLLOW-UP

Six-plus years on, the US still has no comprehensive federal consumer privacy law, and the patchwork Dolan warned about only grew - Indiana, Kentucky and Rhode Island's comprehensive laws took effect in January 2026 alone (IAPP). The Privacy for America federal push never made it out of Congress.

    RECEIPT #MICHAE

    JAN 28, 2008

    Called it.

    PREDICTION BY

    Michael Bassik
“Search advertising could garner closer to 80 percent [of 2008 online political ad spending - double Borrell Associates' estimate that 50 percent, or $10 million, would go to paid search].”

    FOLLOW-UP

Bassik called the search skew before the cycle played out - and the whole category outgrew the forecasters. Obama's campaign alone spent about $16 million online, nearly Borrell's $20 million forecast for everyone, and the spend centered on search and list-building: new media director Joe Rospars reported 10-15x ROI on Google ads (ePolitics, Feb 2009).

    RECEIPT #KEITH-

    FEB 12, 2018

    Partially right.

    PREDICTION BY

    Keith Weed
“As one of the largest advertisers in the world, we cannot have an environment where our consumers don't trust what they see online.”

    FOLLOW-UP

Partially right. Weed threatened to withdraw Unilever advertising from platforms that "create division in society and promote anger and hate" and called parts of the digital supply chain "little better than a swamp". Unilever kept spending on Google and Facebook through 2018-19; the threat only became action in mid-2020, when Unilever paused US ads on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for the rest of that year - then returned in January 2021. Brand safety did become a board-level issue and platforms tightened policies, but the sweeping pull-back never happened at scale.

    RECEIPT #RAJA-R

    JAN 22, 2025

    Partially right.

    PREDICTION BY

    Raja Rajamannar
“Advertising as we know it is dead. The need for communication is still there, but it's not happening through advertising any more.”

    FOLLOW-UP

Partially right. Mastercard really did shift budget into experiential and sensory marketing, and interruption-first advertising keeps losing share to creator, retail-media and experience spend. But advertising as a whole is nowhere near dead: global ad spend passed $1 trillion for the first time in 2024 and kept growing. The blanket claim outruns the evidence; the directional one stands.

    RECEIPT #DANIEL

    DEC 01, 2025

    Too early to tell.

    PREDICTION BY

    Daniel Binns
“The ad business is going to get smaller. Holdco bloodbaths will keep cutting headcount, and there won’t be enough life rafts for everyone who still wants to sail. Yes, new indies will sprout everywhere, but marketing land won’t need nearly as many as will appear. The winners won’t be the biggest names, but the leanest operators. Small teams will do the work of yesterday’s armies. Overhead will be toxic. Speed will be priceless. Adaptability will trump legacy. Strategy and execution will still be highly valued, but old margins are gone.”

    FOLLOW-UP

Filed for tracking. Outcome to be evaluated as the timeline plays out.

    Campaign US

    RECEIPT #BOB-HO

    JAN 01, 2011

    Called it.

    PREDICTION BY

    Bob Hoffman
“I knew I had to leave the agents it took me two years to get out because I had certain responsibilities as CEO of the company but I knew on that that that was a turning point for me where I knew I had to get out”

    FOLLOW-UP

Bob Hoffman successfully left his CEO position in the advertising industry approximately two years after this turning point, as evidenced by his subsequent career as an industry critic, author, and speaker, widely known as 'The Ad Contrarian.'
