FOLLOW-UP
By 2021, smartphone users were in the 3-4+ billion range, not quite 5 billion, but clearly on a steep growth trajectory. The 5-billion mark was reached a few years later in the mid-2020s. The prediction was directionally correct but slightly early on the exact timing.
